Up into the hills

North through Tabanan's villages. Everything gets greener and cooler as we climb, so bring a light layer.

Batu Karu Kopi

A little hillside café looking straight at Mount Batukaru, with the terraces spread out in front. The beans come from their own farm two kilometres up the road. It's right on the way in, just before the main lookout.

The main event

Walk the rice terraces

A UNESCO World Heritage landscape, hundreds of hectares of terraces fed by the old subak water channels. We follow the coloured trail markers down into the paddies, completely away from the road.

Jatiluwih Resto

Right at the top of the lookout by the big Jatiluwih sign, with an outdoor deck looking over the whole valley. Indonesian and Western food, and their red rice tea.

Or Gong Jatiluwih down the lane, all bamboo with a huge balcony (Instagram). Or skip lunch, grab a drink at the waterfall and save ourselves for dinner.

Yeh Hoo Waterfall

Hidden in the forest less than 2 km from the terraces. A short path and some steps down to a natural pool under the falls, and it's rarely busy. Locals treat it as a holy spring, so we keep it respectful.

Back roads and viewpoints

Slow riding through the quiet lanes towards Angseri. Stop wherever the view's good, take photos, grab an iced coffee.

Nadi Farm Cafe

A farm-to-table café on a permaculture farm in the hills, inside a bamboo building looking over rice fields and mountains. Almost everything is grown on the farm or by farmers next door. Mostly vegan and properly good. We stay as the light goes gold around 6:20.

7:00pm · Home

Back down to Canggu

Home around 8:45. Easy pace on the mountain roads in the dark, then the familiar lights of Canggu.
